The Perham/NYM girls swim
team opened their season Monday at the Detroit Lakes Pentathlon. The Jackets finished in 4th place out
of 8 teams with a score of 87.50.
The host Lakers were 5th with 82.5 points. Park Rapids won the event with a score of 234, followed by
Fergus Falls in 2nd with 150.
The Pentathlon has only 5
events, with every swimmer on each team swimming in each event.
“It's a great way to start
the season off to see what our base times are,” Perham head coach Sheri Ressler
said. “I am very pleased with out
times today.”
Perham had several
individuals with top-5 finishes at the meet. Leading the way were 2 of the team’s 10 seniors, Baily Meyer
and Kelsey Kratzke.
Meyer finished in 3rd place
in the 50m butterfly with a time of 29.45. She also finished in 7th place in the 50m backstroke with a
time of 32.08. Overall, Meyer was
the 12th best individual at the meet (154 total swimmers), finishing with 28
team points.
Kratzke finished 3rd in the
50m breaststroke with a time of 33.88.
She also had the team’s top time in the 100m I.M., taking 11th place
with a time of 1:10.75. She
finished as the 14th best swimmer, collecting 25 team points.
Freshman Natalie Murphy was
the team’s top finisher in the 50m free, taking 4th with a time of 27.03. She was 3rd on the team’s point list,
totaling 15 points, making her the 15th best swimmer at the meet.
“The girls have been working
hard and it's already showing in their times,” Ressler said. “Many swam faster
today then they had all last season.”
Four girls qualified for
sections in the 50 freestyle: Murphy, Kratzke, Sam Salathe and Lexi Richter.
The Lady Jackets will get a
lot more practice time in before their next meet, which will be Sept. 8 in
Fosston.
